What to Expect from Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron)

Hardy is on the way to be a better more reliable system than Windows, even if Gutsy and Feisty are, most windows users who used my Ubuntu installation or installed it on their own system didn’t really like it as they found it too complicated to do things such as syncing their iPods or installing the missing wi-fi drivers.

Here are propositions that I think would be able to make the average windows user more familiar with Ubuntu and have a better experience.

Good OS launches new cloud-oriented Linux ‘Rocket’

While Linux remains popular among enthusiasts, its adoption among casual PC users lacks the power to really threaten Microsoft Windows. However a small handful of groups still create operating systems designed to make the transition over to Linux a little bit easier and less intimidating.

To that end, the makers of the Good OS distribution are unveiling a Linux version with a hopefully appealing metaphor.

At a special press event this afternoon, the makers of the Good OS unveiled the gOS Rocket. The operating system is built off a Linux core and is has a specialized focus on cloud computing.

OpenVZ joins forces with Ubuntu

OpenVZ and Ubuntu Linux developers on Tuesday will release pre-built Ubuntu virtual machines, designed to allow system administrators to deploy a specialised Ubuntu system in about a minute.

OpenVZ is an open-source project sponsored by Parallels (known as SWsoft until last month), which forms the basis for the commercial virtualisation software Virtuozzo. Parallels also makes desktop virtualisation software for Mac OS X, among other products.

Parallels and Canonical, Ubuntu’s commercial sponsor, worked together on the virtualised templates, which are based on Ubuntu 7.10.

Pyrolinux 1.0 Gives Off Little Heat

It’s not every day you see the launch of a brand new Linux distribution, so when I heard that Pyrolinux 1.0 was released over Christmas, I thought I’d take a look. Pyrolinux is based on Linux Mint, which is itself a modified version of Ubuntu, so I suppose the term “new distribution” only loosely applies here.

Here’s the vital statistics:
Disto base–Ubuntu/Linux Mint
Packaging–.deb (managed with Apt)
Linux Kernel–2.6.22-14-generic
Default Desktop–Gnome 2.22 Read the rest of this entry »

Ubuntu — Beyond the Hype

Since a few years, Ubuntu has been grabbing headlines in the mainstream press, sometimes to the point where people are referring to Ubuntu where they mean Linux (or GNU/Linux as the case may be)…
Ubuntu (and alongside it, though in a lesser way, its derivatives or siblings Kubuntu, Edubuntu and Xubuntu) has been heralded by many as The One Distribution To Rule Them All, One Distribution to bring them all and in the darkness … Ehh, that’s another story. Read the rest of this entry »

Ubuntu vs. PCLinuxOS: a new winner?

I’ve been using Ubuntu (or a derivative) for two years now. I was amazed at how polished and user-friendly it is. It doesn’t come out of the box with a lot of the software I want, but it’s super easy to install whatever I want. I’ve installed it on other people’s computers (Paul & Yelena) and they’re happy with it too (at least when compared with Windows). It even passed the Mother Test - my mother used my Kubuntu laptop for a month while her desktop was broken, and she was fine with it. Read the rest of this entry »
