Ubuntu Look

Before it is even released (at the time of this writing), I have already found a number of reasons why I will not be upgrading my various computers to Ubuntu 8.10.

Rather than highlighting my own experiences with why upgrading to the next version of the popular Linux distribution is a mistake, let’s instead examine those issues that potentially affect the majority of us. In short, if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. Allow me to elaborate.

1) A history of broken releases

Despite having tremendous love for Linux and to some extent, Ubuntu, lately I have found myself torn. I first tried Ubuntu after dumping another popular distribution of Linux for it back with Ubuntu 6.06. For its time, it was fairly usable. Yet as new releases came out, I was beginning to see less focus on making sure it was ready to roll out of the beta stages and more interest in making sure the distribution remained in the headlines. To point out that this bothers me greatly really goes without saying.

This release includes both Edubuntu for the Desktop as well as Edubuntu Classroom Server for a thin client network environment.

About Ubuntu Education Edition

The 8.10 release continues the restructuring of Edubuntu as the Ubuntu Education Edition. The education desktop and application bundle now installs as an add-on to a standard Ubuntu desktop.

Once the user has completed the standard Ubuntu install, they can then use the Ubuntu Education Edition CD to either:

1. install the full Edubuntu education environment and desktop as a single process, or

Today sees the release of Kubuntu 8.10 featuring the latest KDE 4.1 desktop. The Kubuntu developers have been hard at work, integrating this major new version into a completed desktop. The settings and artwork have been kept close to KDE’s defaults to ensure the best face of our favourite desktop shines through. Desktop effects have been enabled by default for cards which support it thanks to the wonderful KWin and package management comes via a brand new version of Adept. Printer Applet and System Config Printer KDE were written to ensure a complete user experience, both are now part of KDE itself. Update Manager, Language Selector and plenty other tools have been reworked for KDE 4. Upgrade, download or request a free CD.

Ubuntu, as Linux kernel developer Greg Kroah-Hartman will tell you, hasn’t done much to date with improving the Linux kernel. On the other hand, as Canonical CEO and top Ubuntu guy Mark Shuttleworth pointed out in a recent press conference, “Ubuntu’s focus has been on high-quality integration.” Based on my work with the Ubuntu 8.10 release candidate, which goes final tomorrow, October 30th 2008, I agree with Shuttleworth.

I’ve been running Ubuntu 8.10, aka “Intrepid Ibex,” on a Gateway GT5622. This PC uses a 1.80GHz Intel Pentium Dual-Core E2160 processor. It has 3GB of RAM, a 400GB SATA II hard drive and a DVD R/W drive. For graphics, it uses the Intel GMA (Graphics Media Accelerator) 950, which was set to pull 224MB of RAM from main memory to use as shared video memory.

The new release of Ubuntu, codenamed Intrepid Ibex, is scheduled for October 30 and pre-orders are available through ShipIt, a wonderful service which allows you request completely free CDs, which usually arrive in one month.

Intrepid comes with pretty much bleeding-edge packages: GNOME 2.24.1, OpenOffice 2.4.1 (OpenOffice 3.0 is now available, but it is not included in 8.10), Firefox 3.0.3 and GIMP 2.6.1. Although Firefox 3.1 Beta 1 is out, 3.0.3 is the version which ships with Intrepid, and I guess it’s a smart choice considering there was enough time to test this release.

In this article I will briefly review 10 most essential applications which come by default included on the Ubuntu desktop CD. I took several screenshots using the default Ubuntu theme, and a few using the new DarkRoom theme.

Because Ubuntu 8.04 LTS is a long-term support release, users of that
release will not be offered an automatic upgrade to 8.10 via Update Manager.

The release of Ubuntu 8.10 “Intrepid Ibex” is just moments away. If indeed this latest version of Ubuntu will sport a new theme, then we will certainly be seeing an ultra-fresh default wallpaper. I’ve seen several great-looking wallpapers posted at Ubuntu Wiki that would look good on Intrepid Ibex (see below).
