On-chip Ubuntu for ARM devices
Canonical has announced that from April 2009, Ubuntu Linux will support the ARMv7 processors used in smaller devices and system-on-chip devices. The ARM version of Ubuntu will include a full desktop operating system optimised for the platform.
ARM processors are used in portable devices such as netbooks as well as a range of Internet appliances.
The move by Canonical to support the ARM platform is very much in keeping with Ubuntu’s current focus on the “digital lifestyle” in which it envisions a range of connected devices working seamlessly together.
