Retrospect on Ubuntu in 2009

As 2009 draws to a close, it’s time to take a look back at what Ubuntu and its community have accomplished in the outgoing year. There may be nothing revolutionary to report, but there have nonetheless been some notable changes to Ubuntu itself and the community around it over the last year. Here’s a look at the most memorable ones.

Many of the developments discussed below were the work of parties not affiliated with Ubuntu or Canonical, and many of them apply to other Linux distributions and the rest of the free-software community as well as to Ubuntu. But they’ve all impacted the experience of Ubuntu users, so they’re worth highlighting here.
