The old “Ubuntu doesn’t contribute back” argument cropped up again when Dave Neary released a report of the talk he gave at GUADEC on the contributions made to the GNOME desktop environment. He found that Red Hat and Novell contributed the most and that Ubuntu and Mandriva (primarily a KDE distribution) was among the lowest. [...] Dell has announced the release of its proprietary OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) 6.3 for Ubuntu 9.10 or later. OMSA is a web browser or command line driven system administration tool for servers. The .deb packaged and community supported release was completed with a “generous donation” of several weeks of engineering time by Canonical, which allowed [...] You know it’s a weird news week when I defend Canonical. Once again they are under attack for not contributing enough, and for ascending to peaks of glory on the backs of Real Linux Contributors. Um, yeah. I’m not much of an Ubuntu fan, but this latest barrage seems based more on peeve than substance. [...] I’ve been using the latest version (10.04) of Ubuntu Linux since April and there’s a lot to like about it. I announced earlier this year that I was giving desktop Linux another look, and I went with Ubuntu because it is the Linux distribution most focused on a desktop OS. Just like what is expected of a server operating system, it is not intended for the general user base [...] In my opinion Linux Mint is one of the top 3 distributions out today for basic desktop usage. It features incredibly useful Mint-specific tools that make it the perfect distro for beginners. All flavors of Linux Mint usually come with a jaw dropping look and feel. I decided to look at both of these while [...] If you’re looking for Ubuntu powered netbook that is as beautiful outside as it is inside then prepare to coo over the latest ‘Starling’ netbooks to hatch from the nest of Ubuntu-dedicated hardware company System76… Starling Netbook First off let’s get the boring bit out of the way: As netbooks go, the Starling is atypical [...] Welcome to the Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter. This is Issue #203 for the week July 18th – July 24th and is available here. In this issue we cover: Last call for Maverick server papercuts Ubuntu Maverick open for translation Native readers: extending the Beta MOTU Interview: Maia Kozheva (sikon / LucidFox) An Interview With Silver Fox [...] Here in the Linux community, we’re already pretty accustomed to strange behavior from hardware vendors when it comes to our favorite operating system. Sometimes, though, you just have to sit back and scratch your head. The latest example? None other than Dell. After the curious case of its disappearing “love letter” to Linux a few [...] Chances are good that if someone walked into your office right now and peeked over your shoulder, they would see a Windows operating system on your computer. But, did you know that you have a choice of something other than Windows for that computer on your desk, and that you have the same choice for [...] |
