Mark Shuttleworth: The Whole Patent System Is A Sham

Mark Shuttleworth, the charismatic founder of Ubuntu, slammed the patent system as broken. He also said that Microsoft’s biggest mistake was to think that they could use patents against competition and wasted most of a decade.

Mark said:

The biggest mistake microsoft made was to decide that patents would be an effective defence against new competitors because that stops you from really innovating yourself. So Microsoft wasted most of a decade, thinking they could use patents to defend the castle. Maanwhile, others were innovating for real.

Mark is right and there is less doubt that Microsoft is now trailing in almost all areas other than its core desktop OS and office suite business.
